German fans have turned to an unorthodox source for their World Cup predictions: a fortune-telling octopus named Paul.
The octopus, who resides in the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, currently holds a 100% success rate in predicting the outcome of Germany’s matches in the 2010 World Cup. In order to consult the octopus oracle, two glass boxes containing mussels are lowered into Paul’s tank – each containing the flag of the competing teams. Whichever box he opens first is considered his prediction for the winning team. (He predicts a German win against Ghana today.) (UPDATE: He was right!)
Octopi are considered among the most intelligent species in the animal kingdom. However, as the octopus was born in an aquarium in England, it is unclear where Paul’s true loyalties lie.
