A sensually interwoven tapestry of passion, strength, weakness and absolute power, Showtime‘s provocative hit, The Tudors, captivates voyeuristic audiences around the world. Let’s take a closer look at the show’s major players:
Hedonistic King Henry VIII:
Stunningly played by Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, both actor and king astrologically share demanding Mercury in Leo, giving them the thought patterns of someone who will not be denied as well as the communication skills of someone who could charm the skin right off a snake. Born second in line to the Tudor dynasty, King Henry’s Sun in Cancer gave him the opportunity to fulfill his destiny of putting “family first” both at home in the castle and outwardly to his realm. But his Cancer over-neediness for a son caused his Jupiter (overindulgence) in the 10th house of reputation to spiral out of control. His life’s mission was honorable, to produce a son, (Saturn in the 5th house of children), but wow, his methods (Mars in the 1st house) were rather despicable and selfish. He had a voracious sexual appetite (Moon in the 8th house) and married 6 times, trying to get an heir. He justified his methods by telling himself that England needed a King at any cost. Handsome and intelligent, recklessly indulgent and quick to anger when denied, Henry stopped at nothing to leave a long-remembered (Cancer) legacy.
Powerless Queen Catherine d’Aragon, Henry’s First Wife & Queen:
Played by the beautiful and graceful Libra actress Maria Doyle Kennedy, the Queen was all royalty, sans power. Queen Catherine was a high achieving Capricorn and her Uranus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars and Saturn, all in religious Sagittarius, gave her natural devotion to religion. With Venus in Cap she was destined to love a man of power and ambition. It’s not surprising that she remained loyal and steadfast to Henry, because Capricorns know in their DNA the importance of the organization, or realm, in this case. Catherine’s life crumbled when she could not provide the King a son. She was not a stupid woman, but was powerless to change her inevitable banishment because women were forbidden to have a decision making voice of any kind. Suffering quietly, Catherine’s Capricorn nature did not want to buck the system and at the same time, didn’t want to lose what she had worked so hard for. Even her parents, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, who bankrolled Christopher Columbus’ voyages, could not help.
Saucy Anne Boleyn, Henry’s Second Wife & Queen:
English actress Natalie Dormer plays the wickedly conniving and patient 2nd wife to King Henry VIII. Anne Boleyn was born a sensual Taurus who had high striving Capricorn in her 5th house of love. There was never a question that she would marry well. Determined to settle for no less than the throne, she withheld her sexual favors from the King for seven years, refusing to become his mistress, like her sister Mary had done. Mad with Mars in the 1st house passion for her, the King set about annulment proceedings with Catherine in order to have Anne and hopefully a legitimate son. Anne’s patient Taurus personality continued to flirt with him, promising him delights untold, but steadfastly denied him her prolific Mars in Taurus sexual favors until he married her. She was a challenge to Henry with her wit, style and unavailability. Once married, the hopes of delivering a male child were lost. Henry’s impatient Mercury in Leo set about to remove wife number two by falsely convicting her of adultery and incest, had her beheaded and without a second thought, went on to his next victim, I mean wife. Little known fact – actress Natalie Dormer’s ancestor was Jane Dormer, a lady in waiting to Mary I, who was the eldest daughter of Henry VIII and only surviving child of his queen, Catherine.
The Tudors is a vicarious romp through the arousing challenges of the powerful and wealthy and titillates our imagination to ask, “What would I do if I were that rich?”
