A Doberman Named Mariah

A year after my husband and I had purchased a new home in Wisconsin with a fenced yard, we were sitting at the kitchen table one morning and I said to him that I would like to give a needy soul a good home. It felt like the right time.

Many years prior to that I had managed one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in the Midwest — I also had rescued several Doberman Pinschers from the shelter by making them apart of my family. My love for the Doberman Pinscher breed grew so much that I started to breed and show in obedience.

However, this time I just wanted to adopt a mutt — pure breeds are always more adoptable anyway. Yep, I wanted just a little ugly, scruffy, lovable mutt … the kind of mutt that most would pass over and not even glance twice at when strolling the aisles at the shelters. In fact, the last words out of my mouth to my husband when we were walking out the door on our way to the shelter one fine Saturday afternoon was, “I’m looking for the ugliest, scruffiest dog there … no more purebreds and no more Dobermans!” Read the rest of this entry »

The Truth About Blue Moons

December 31, 2009 at 1:00 am

How many times have you heard the phrase “once in a blue moon?” Well, it’s more than just an expression — a blue moon is the name given to an actual phenomenon. Here’s how it works.

A full lunar cycle is a little over 28 days long. However, a calendar year is more than that, which means that during some years, you may end up with thirteen full moons instead of twelve — depending on where in the month the lunar cycle falls. This is because during each calendar year, you end up with twelve full 28-day cycles, and a leftover accumulation of eleven or twelve days. Those days accumulate, and so about once every 28 months, you end up with an extra moon during the month.

In folklore, the monthly moon phases were each given names that helped people prepare for various types of weather and crop rotations. Although these names varied depending on culture and location, they generally identified the sort of weather or other natural phenomenon that might take place in a given month. The term “blue moon” was given to the second full moon to appear in a calendar month.

Although there is no formal significance attached to the blue moon in modern Wiccan and other Earth based religions, you can certainly treat it as an especially magickal time. Think of it as a lunar bonus round.

In some traditions, special ceremonies may be held — some Wiccans only perform initiations at the time of a blue moon.

The blue moon will appear tonight, which is also referred to as: Long Nights Moon.

Enjoy your blue moon, and remember…the magick comes from within.

The History of Halloween

October 31, 2009 at 10:21 am

Halloween dates back well over 6,000 years to the ancient fire festival of Samhain. Celts celebrated this day on November 1st — this is their New Year marking the end of Summer and the 3rd and final harvest of the season.

November Eve was believed to be the veil between realms — the veil so thin that the ghosts and the dead came back into our world. During this time, Celtic Priests made predictions about the future and people found these prophecies important sources of comfort and direction during a long, dark, harsh winter. Costumes were worn, fortune telling was told as well as story telling. The hearth was extinguished early on November Eve and re-lit from the sacred bonfire to protect them during the coming winter.

By 43 A.D. Romans conquered most of Celtic territories, but not without a good fight! Within the course of 400 years, two Roman festivals were combined Feralia — a commemoration of the passing of the dead — and a day to honor Pomona the Goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple which is how bobbing for apples became incorporated into Samhain.

By the 800′s Christianity spread through Celtic lands and Pope Boniface IV designated November 1st as All Saints Day to honor all saints and martyrs. The Pope at this time was trying to replace the Celtic festivals with a related, but church sanctioned holiday.

Then around 1000 A.D. the church made November 2nd All Soul’s Day which was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, dressing in costumes as saints, angels, and devils…together these celebrations were called Hallowmas.

Halloween Comes to America
As Europeans came over with their different costumes, beliefs and ethnic groups as well as American Indian beliefs, a distinct American version of Halloween was born. Play parties, apple bobbing, celebrating the harvests, neighbors sharing stories of the dead, fortune telling, dancing, singing, bonfires…etc.

By 1846, America was flooded with Irish immigrants fleeing from deadly potato plague…this blended an Irish-American tradition of dressing up in costumes and going house to house asking for food or money…you guessed it, this is where Trick or Treating comes from.

What started as festivals celebrating the harvests and the dearly departed has since become largely a holiday fostering community and neighborhood goodwill.

Have a Happy Halloween!

Blessed Be,

Drawing Down the Sun

A prayer from Gina Rose ext. 9500

Helios, wondrous God of the Sun. You who greets dawn with beautiful reds, pinks and orange colors. You who rides the blue skies traveling East to West glowing as bright as a golden flame and controls our bountiful harvests. You who controls intellect, healing, protection, strength, music, poetry, prophecy and success. On this day in this hour I call upon Helio’s power. Merge within me light into light. Woman and God glowing warm and bright. Healing, power and strength pour down from thee. Protect me from any harm and negativity.

As I will it, so must it be.

Blessed Be )O(…Gina Rose ext.9500
