Baby’s Blue

The Witchita Eagle this week covered the release of a documentary called “The Indigo Evolution.” The film is an exploration of Indigo Children, especially perceptive and highly evolved kids who operate at “a different frequency” than the rest of us according to aura readers.

Reporter Dianna Marder writes of Dina Melendez, a Philedelphia resident who was was taken aback when her 4-year-old started talking about his past lives, describing brothers, sisters, two dogs and a cat.

“And then he told me he died when he was 6 and that he waited before being born again — waited for me so I could be his mommy,” Melendez, tells the paper.

But it’s what Matthew says about the future that both rattles his mother and leads her to conclude that he is an Indigo Child.

“I’m not going to grow up,” Matthew says nonchalantly when he is questioned about the future. “Not everybody grows up.”

Melendez told the paper she’s convinced Matthew is not imitating Peter Pan but predicting his own death.

“That really frightens me,” she says.

Indigo children are described as “old souls” returning to Earth to usher in an era of environmental renewal and political rebirth born of peace and compassion. While there are skeptics in the medical and scientific fields, the movement has gained thousands of believers since it began in the 1980s, spawning books, Web sites, services and specialists. This weekend, followers are expected to line up to see “The Indigo Evolution,” which premieres at some 500 churches and community centers around the world, including the Great Plains Earth Institute in Witchita.

James Twyman is the producer/director of the film.

“These new humans, this evolution we’re seeing, is in answer to the mess we have made of the world,” he says. Twyman also executive produced, “Indigo,” another film on the same subject, which grossed nearly $1.4 million on its opening weekend, according to the paper.

Indigo believers say that we’re simply not as aware as these children, who are sometimes very restless individuals, often mis-diagnosed as ADHD. Consumerism and the hectic pace of modern life have gotten in the way of our awareness and Indigo Children get frustrated.

According to self-help and spiritual publisher Hay House, sales of Indigo-related books are at the half-million mark. It seems that despite any skeptics, the phenomenon resounds with a lot of people. Believers remain undaunted, noting that medicine and science are often slow to catch up. For instance, it’s only recently that meditation has received its long overdue acceptance as a benefit to the mind and body.

Golden Fleece

January 26, 2006 at 9:00 am
By S.K. Smith

Anyone who is familiar with New Age ideology (or saw “What the Bleep Do We Know”) understands that we benefit by environments which offer positive reinforcement and foster creativity. In other words, you’ve got to put in good stuff to put out good stuff. And these sheep are a perfect example.

The headline from the Reuters article: Operatic Sheep really do grow golden fleece.

Sure enough, for the second year in a row, the special flock, whose owner keeps them indoors in small groups where they can enjoy music, namely Italian Opera (and especially Andrea Bocelli), while feeding them a secret, nutritionist recommended diet of grains and specially grown hay, produced a bale of the world’s finest wool – matching their own record.

Italian designer Loro Piana said the 205 pound bale measured 11.8 microns, compared with the average Australian merino wool which measures 20-21 microns. When it comes to microns, the fewer, the better. Superfine wool is defined as 19.5 microns or finer per strand.

The Italian company said it bought the bale for $174,800 – 357 times the normal market price for wool!

Only 5 percent of wool goes below 17 microns. Loro Piana uses the wool to make suits that sell for up to $15,000 Australian currency.

While you may not grow golden fleece, don’t let it be said that how you spend your time, what you eat and how you take care of yourself doesn’t have a huge impact on your productivity or what you get out of life. If you treat yourself right and immerse yourself in things that are in tune with how you’d like to be, you’ll grow in that direction.

Science and Spirituality

When the Dalai Lama speaks on the relationship of science and religion, you may be surprised by what he says. When he visited the Society for Neuroscience to discuss pursuing further, more detailed research into the benefits of meditation on the brain, the Dalai Lama expressed what some may find a surprising stance on the debate over science and religion.

According to the publication, the Dalai Lama’s scientific awakening came when he “looked through a telescope and on seeing the shadows in the craters of the moon, realized he had to make a choice.” While Buddhism taught him to respect the moon as a generator of light, science showed him that the moon reflected the sun’s rays. In the end, he chose to believe science, but he didn’t give up his religion.

Likewise, the Dalai Lama says that in his current dealings politically and otherwise, he favors scientific evidence over classical Buddhist concepts. But he says the two needn’t cancel each other out. While American judiciaries battle over religion-free science education, the Lama urges people to take a path of peace between the perspectives. He suggested a healthy dose of skepticism toward religious pronouncements according to the publication, while supporting faith.

“Although science can overturn spiritual teachings, people can benefit from scientific understanding without losing faith,” he reasoned.

The Tibetan leader also emphasized that religion can help science, not just hinder it, using meditation as his example. Specifically, he urged neuroscientists not to discount the role of the Buddhist tradition on the brain.

“Try to find reality with an open mind,” he said, referring both to investigations in science as well as to studies in Buddhist thought. “Without investigation, we can’t see reality.”

Altered Consciousness

January 24, 2006 at 12:00 am
By S.K. Smith

Do you remember the gorgeous girl in high school who was convinced she was ugly? Her low self-esteem made her awkward (or even overly outspoken), resulting in bad luck when it came to romance – which, naturally, only reinforced her misperception of herself. This may have even been you or someone you’re close to. You may still be experiencing the problem.

Inaccurate, negative self-perception is something that many of us struggle with – a conflict between how we see ourselves and how we are, objectively. Often, we become almost hypnotized by our frequent thoughts of ourselves – whether those thoughts are positive or cruelly negative.

Postive
This is where the frequent admonitions to “Think Positive” or recite affirmations arise from – yet recent studies show that trying to overlay positive statements over a chronic negative self-assessment is often ineffective. It’s like laying bright wallpaper over a crumbling wall – the wall may be ostensibly sunnier for a bit, but ultimately it’s falling away. And it’s still going to come down, because it’s not the surface, but the underlying issue that needs to be resolved.

Negative
The more negative our self-image, the more convinced we are that nothing will change for the better – especially the circumstances of our lives. Psychologists have shown that people who are positive and cheerful tend to be enjoy more success, in large part because they don’t feel defeated at the outset. A good attitude about yourself will translate into more success, which makes you more energetic and then attracts more success in an upward spiraling cycle.

Get there from here
The first powerful step to change is remarkably easy. Just notice what you think about yourself. By that simple act, you’re bringing your repetitive internal “self-talk” into consciousness. As this comes into conscious focus, you may be surprised to hear how you talk to yourself, and how many of these ideas of yourself date back long years. While the outer circumstances of your life may have changed as you became an adult, your inner view of yourself may still be built on unfortunate experiences and the emotional memories of your childhood or adolescence.

Journal it
The next step requires a little more dedication, but remains relatively simple. Keep a journal of these statements and note when they occur. Are you harshest with yourself at work, at home, in your romantic life, with your children? What situations trigger negative self-talk? Over time your journal will make these “trigger areas” in your life obvious. Then you can try a technique derived from Cognitive Therapy. Draw a line down the center of a piece of paper. On one side write the negative statement and on the other, the actual reality – the truth.

For example:

That was so stupid!
I am so stupid!
That was a careless mistake.
Everyone makes them occasionally.
Mistakes do not mean I’m stupid.

This will make your automatic, unconscious negativity obvious and allow you to make a clear and conscious decision if you want to continue to treat yourself in a manner you’d never treat a stranger, a child, a co-worker. Why choose to treat yourself so differently than you’d treat others? Is this how you want to live your life? What would your life be like if you treated yourself with the kindness you lavish on others? What might be possible for you to give and to create if you were 100% ‘behind yourself?’ Think of what you might bring to the world.

Changing the world is a matter of changing our minds about the world – and that begins with consciously changing our minds about ourselves. From this radical decision to choose ourselves and create our lives, magic is made. When we are positive and kind with ourselves, it radiates out to everyone we meet and literally changes our environments. By concentrating on changing what is in our power to change, the world will be wonderfully, creatively different.

But like everything, the change begins at home – with yourself.

Is It All In Your Mind?

January 19, 2006 at 5:00 am
By S.K. Smith

You’ve probably heard about the body-mind connection. What it says is this: you become what you think and feel. This phenomena is what explains why, for example, thinking about a muscle while exercising it, trains it better. On a grander scale, this is the reason that convincing yourself of something (say your own inability to find love for instance) causes it to occur. The good news is, you can change the way you think, and change your life!

It may surprise you to learn that the body-mind connection is not some “new-fangled” thinking, but rather finds its roots in the ancient science of Ayurveda. Ayurvedic principles dictate that the source of every disease is in the mind. In other words, whatever happens to your body is a direct reflection of what’s going on in your head. For instance, depression drains the body while joy breathes life into it. Likewise, when you’re motivated you feel energetic, but when you’re not, lethargy sets in. According to Ayurvedic reasoning, if your mind is congested, you’ll be constipated. And if you’re unable to process your emotions you’ll experience digestive issues.

Ayurveda itself comes from the teachings of the Upanishads, the ancient Vedic text used by Brahmin, which pre-date even Krisha and Buddha in the realm of “Eastern” thinking. The Isha Upanishad states that following one’s conscience is the permanent cure for every disease. By nourishing our self-respect, self-trust and self-confidence, we are able to unleash will-power and determination, and ideally, summon the healing forces we inherently hold within ourselves. Naturally, this can apply to healing our situations.

A recent article in an Indian newspaper notes, “When the choice is between the highest good and mere pleasure, we often choose pleasure and cannot reach the real state of contentment and stillness of the mind hence, various diseases follow.”

We can apply the same reasoning to our living situations. If a situation is comfortable or habitual, but not benefiting your highest good, choosing to remain in it will only strengthen the problem. This goes for your dating, relationships, family patterns and work. When something is making you feel badly, the solution then, is change. Whether abandoning the situation, altering your approach or simply changing how you think of it. Take note however, that a change that does not alter your perception will only result in recreating the situation until your lesson is learned.

Within us is the cause of everything that happens to us. This does not mean you’re always to blame for your problems, but it does mean that it is only you who can create your solutions.

The body-mind connection means you can change the way you feel – about yourself and the world around you! Isn’t that good news?

Just Dreamy

January 17, 2006 at 9:00 am
By S.K. Smith

Curious about the lands you visit while you sleep? Take a look at these facts about dreaming. You may be surprised!

1. By the end of your life, you will have spent about 6 years dreaming. That’s more than 2,100 days spent in a different world!

2. During the Roman Era, striking and significant dreams were submitted to the Senate for analysis and interpretation.

3. Everybody dreams. Simply because you don’t remember your dream does not mean you didn’t dream it!

4. We dream on average of one or two hours every night. And we often even have 4-7 dreams in one night.

5. Blind people dream as often as seeing people do! Whether their dreams are visual depends on whether they were blind at birth or became blind later. However, vision isn’t the only sense that constitutes a dream. Sounds, tactility, and smell become hypersensitive for the blind. Their dreams are based on these senses.

6. Five minutes after the end of the dream, half the content is forgotten. After ten minutes, 90% is lost.

7. Men tend to dream more about other men, while women dream equally about men and women.

8. Studies have shown that our brain waves are more active when we are dreaming than when we are awake.

9. People who are giving up smoking have longer and more intense dreams.

10. Toddlers do not dream about themselves. They don’t appear in their own dreams until the age of 3 or 4.

11. If you are snoring, then you cannot be dreaming.

12. In a poll, 67% of Americans have experienced Deja Vu in their dreams.

Rub Your Belly!

December 31, 2005 at 1:00 am
By S.K. Smith

Did you know there is an ancient form of abdominal massage practiced for centuries (or maybe even millenia) in Central America, Africa and China? It’s Mayan abdominal massage, a technique used for treating PMS, uterine fibroids, varicose veins, low back pain, diminished libido, period-related migraines and frequent urination in women as well as providing prostate and digestive benefits for men.

Midwives and native healers have cared for women using massage, herbs, and prayer throughout history. The technique was brought to the U.S. by Rosita Arvigo, DN (Doctor of Naprapathy), a Chicago native who studied with Don Elijio Panti (one of the great Mayan Shaman) before working for 30 years as a healer in Belize, where one-third of her practice was Mayan abdominal massage. According to Rosita, the figure is not surprising since Don Elijio believed that 90% of women have a displaced uterus. What does that mean? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like!

Don Elijio, who died in 1996 at the age of 103 but did shamanic healing until he was 98, stressed that the uterus is a woman’s center. “If the uterus is not in proper position and in good health,” he would say, “nothing in her life will be right. She will be as out of balance as her uterus in her physical, emotional, and spiritual life.”

A displaced uterus can be caused by a number of common things (like wearing high heels, chronic constipation, carrying young children on your hip or high impact exercise), and according to the publication Fit Yoga, symptoms include weak, tired legs, numb feet, sore heels when walking, varicose veins, low back pain, low sex drive and various digestive problems among others. Rosita has studied with several traditional healers after Don Elijio, in addition to more American, scientific training.

“My favorite thing is applying science to ancient traditions” she says. “After my apprenticeship with Don Elijio, I spent another 10 years studying biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy to come up with a systematic approach to uterine healing.”

If you’re experiencing the aforementioned symptoms, she says that an adapted version of Mayan Abdominal Massage may be your answer. Fit Yoga continues:

“As refined by Rosita, Maya Abdominal Massage is a noninvasive hands-on (and hands-only) technique performed on the pelvic region to correct the position of uterus. By gently guiding internal abdominal organs back into their proper position, it improves organ function getting the blood, nerves, lymphatic system, and vital life force flowing. This release unblocks physical and emotional congestion, and supports the body’s natural ability to heal and maintain homeostasis by removing obstructions. A healthy womb depends on this flow.”

According to the article, a majority of patients report a reduction or reversal of symptoms after several treatments. Practitioners sometimes also recommend yoga, light exercise, stretching, breathing exercises, tai chi, herbal steam baths, herbs, and a wholesome diet. They all recommends self-care.

“Before 1915, medical texts talked about misplaced wombs,” Rosita tells the magazine. “The tragedy is that this healing tradition is not being passed down. We’re being brainwashed that ‘old-fashioned’ ways aren’t useful. In Belize, we don’t have infertility problems or C-sections.”

Rosita uses the statistic that fertility treatments offer just a 30% success rate on the whole while abdominal-massage practitioners who combine their therapy with herbs report a 50-70% success rate among patients. “This kind of massage is one of the most vital practices to hold onto, insists Rosita. To lose it, she says, “would be literally throwing out the baby with the bathwater.”

Healing Hands

November 23, 2005 at 10:00 am
By Jen Tartaglione

Multiple news outlets ranging from Malaysia to Canada have recently run reports on Reiki, an alternative healing method wherein the practitioner lays hands on the client sending healing energy to affected areas.

Skeptics say it’s just “esoteric mumbo-jumbo,” but advocates argue that there is a universal energy which can be accessed by all people – we just don’t all know how to do it! Reiki relates to the chakras (or energy centers) of the human body, and the practice of laying hands itself is said to cleanse the chakras, leaving them open and in balance.

For Michael Weiss, a Reiki teacher in the German city of Bielefeld, Reiki has become essential. “Normally the person lies on a couch and I place my hands on different parts of the body like the head, chest, stomach, legs and back,” Weiss tells a Malaysian newspaper. “It is like being a radio receiver for energy and passing it on.” Experts say that Reiki can be learned by anyone. However, Weiss warns that Reiki is not an alternative to seeing a doctor.

“It is important to see a doctor first. The course is not enough to reach a diagnosis,” he says. A typical session lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, and according to Weiss “is based on the free will of the individual. He who wants to receive Reiki, receives it. He who does not want it will not get it.”

In any case, Reiki is a holistic approach to wellness that requires using the mind, body and spirit connection.
