Sela Ward’s Stars

July 11, 2010 at 5:00 am
By Cortney Litwin

Best known for her award-winning roles in the TV series “Sisters” and “Once and Again,” actress Sela Ward was a small-town girl who made it big in Hollywood. Born today in Mississippi, Sun and and Mercury in Cancer and Moon in Virgo indicate a deeply feminine woman who values her roots. Cancer is, after all, the sign of family. In her book “Homesick: A Memoir,” Ward describes her path from cheerleader and homecoming queen at the University of Alabama to successful actress. Her talent for writing comes from Venus in Gemini, the sign of communications.

In typical Cancer fashion, Ward turned down the role of Susan Mayer in “Desperate Housewives” because the demanding hours would have interfered with her family life (she’s been married since 1992 and has two children). Then in 2002, she established an emergency shelter for children awaiting placement in foster care homes, called Hope Village for Children, located in her hometown of Meridian. It’s the perfect endeavor for someone with Moon in Virgo, the sign of service.

Jessica Simpson’s Blonde Ambition

July 10, 2010 at 5:00 am
By Cortney Litwin

Sensitive, talented and strong-willed, singer and TV personality Jessica Simpson was born today in 1980. Sun and Mercury in Cancer indicate she’s caring and deeply emotional. Cancer is also the sign of food, so it’s intriguing that Simpson’s weight gain sparked a public debate over the attention paid to women’s bodies, which in turn led to Simpson’s VH1 reality series “The Price of Beauty.” Actually, bringing attention to women’s issues is likely part of her karma. Simpson may be a pop-turned-country diva, but Jupiter and Saturn in Virgo indicate a destiny of service.

Still, Venus in Gemini says she has multiple talents to draw upon, not the least of which is verbal self-expression. Pluto squares to Sun and Mercury heighten her will, while trines from Uranus intensify her charisma and inventiveness.

As for romance, with Venus opposing Neptune, the fantasy of love can be better than the reality, which may explain why her marriage to Nick Lachey didn’t last. Fortunately, Simpson has plenty of time to find Mr. Right.

Tom Hanks: Catch Him If You Can

July 9, 2010 at 1:00 pm
By Cortney Litwin

As an empathetic Water sign, Tom Hanks is a natural (and prolific) actor. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor two years running, for Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump in 1994. He’s adept at both drama and comedy (remember his TV series Bosom Buddies?), along with directing, writing, and producing.

So what’s his secret?

Born today in 1956, Hanks has Sun and Mercury in Cancer, which indicate great depth of feeling, both professionally and personally. Moon in Leo gives him a warm and charismatic presence and a talent for entertaining. Leo is, after all, the sign of the performer. A Moon-Uranus conjunction heightens his originality, but it may be Mars in Pisces that gives Hanks the imagination to excel at his craft. He’s an intuitive actor, able to feel the depth and breadth of each character he portrays. This influence also connects him to other Water signs on a sexual level. He and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, a Scorpio, have been happily married since 1988.

Beck is “Where It’s At”

July 8, 2010 at 12:00 pm
By Cortney Litwin

Singer-songwriter Beck, known for his alternative-eclectic style, was born today in 1970. He has Sun, Mercury, and Mars conjunct in Cancer, giving him an intense focus on emotional self-expression. In his case, those feelings are channeled into his music. Jupiter in Libra indicates a love of the arts, which isn’t surprising considering he comes from a family of musicians and visual artists. Jupiter is a powerful influence because it squares the Cancer placements, enabling Beck to express his creativity in a big way. What’s more, Venus in Leo gives him a talent for performing.

Emotionally, Moon in Virgo says he needs work that nourishes his soul. And because Virgo is a mutable sign, it gives him great versatility as a multi-instrumentalist. In his personal life, the Cancer-Virgo combination indicates a need for strong family ties. In 2004, Beck married actress Marissa Ribisi, the twin sister of actor Giovanni Ribisi. The couple has a son and daughter.

Ringo Starr Shines Onstage & Off

July 7, 2010 at 1:00 pm
By Cortney Litwin

Few people know that Beatles drummer Ringo Starr was a sickly kid. Born today in 1940, he has Neptune opposing ascendant in Pisces, which gives him a weak constitution. He was in and out of hospitals for various ailments during his childhood, plus he endured a two-year stay at a sanatorium for chronic pleurisy. Still, the Neptune and Pisces influences, both known for bestowing divine inspiration, are what make him such a talented (if introverted) musician.

If it weren’t for having Moon, Mercury, Mars, and Pluto conjunct in Leo, Starr wouldn’t have had the courage to get up on stage. This fiery foursome gives him exceptional creativity, along with the persistence to pursue his dreams. He shines onstage, but Sun in Cancer says he’s really a homebody. He’s been married twice and has three children from his first marriage. He and his second wife, Bond girl Barbara Bach, a Virgo, have been married for nearly 30 years.

Edie Falco is “Nurse Jackie”

July 5, 2010 at 5:00 am
By Cortney Litwin

It’s no wonder that Edie Falco nailed the lead role in Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. Born today in 1963, Falco is a mix of Cancer, the sign of nurturing, and Virgo, the sign of healing — the perfect combination for a nurse! With Sun, Mercury and the North Node in Cancer, she has deep feelings for her family or for anyone in need of some TLC.

She’s unusually sensitive, and a Sun-Neptune trine makes her even more so. Because Neptune is the planet of fantasy, its influence also heightens Falco’s acting skills. In addition, Mars, Uranus, and Pluto in Virgo indicate that she’s highly analytical and detailed-oriented. The Mars-Pluto conjunction says she’s also controlling. Virgo rules health, and Falco has fought a battle on two fronts concerning her body: She’s a breast cancer survivor and a recovering alcoholic. Like any good healer – even if it’s just onscreen – her personal struggles have undoubtedly made her more understanding of people grappling with their own flaws.

Tom Cruise is “Knight and Day”

July 3, 2010 at 5:00 am
By Cortney Litwin

With Moon, Venus and Uranus in courageous, fiery Leo, Tom Cruise is a natural for heroic roles (think Top Gun, Mission Impossible, The Last Samurai and Valkyrie). Born today in 1962, he’s is a mix of Fire and Water elements, which says he’s highly emotional, passionate and intuitive. A Grand Water Trine involving Sun in Cancer, Jupiter in Pisces and Neptune in Scorpio deepens his feelings, which in turn fuels his acting skills. He’s also intensely private.

Mars in Taurus makes him a magnet for money as one of Hollywood’s highest paid actors. But without the Leo influences, Cruise would be content with staying on the sidelines of fame. Moon in Leo says he craves attention, while Venus in Leo heightens his talent for performing.

In his personal life, Cruise is lusty, warmhearted, and willful. His wife, actress Katie Holmes, is a Sagittarius with Moon and Jupiter in Leo, indicating she shares her husband’s passion, creativity, and expressiveness.
