Sex in Dreams

Have you ever dreamed of having sex with someone you know, but aren’t the least bit attracted to? Or dreamed of romping in bed with a celebrity – or even a stranger? Have you ever dreamed of having sex with (gasp!) an animal? Such titillating dreams are perfectly normal.

These dreams often symbolize your sexual attitudes or desires, or they can reflect your urge to merge with a characteristic of your dream lover – a quality that you want in yourself. As you can see, sex dreams aren’t always about sex. Let’s take a look into the sometimes-salacious world of sexy dreams to decipher their hidden messages.

Your sex life
The most obvious reason for dreaming of sex is that you went to bed aroused, and the dream was a reflection of your, um, hormones. The dream might have provided an outlet for suppressed desire, or your unconscious mind might have wanted you to take notice of this part of your life – are you, by any chance, neglecting it? After all, the purpose of most dreams is to illuminate your inner world, so you can lead a more fulfilling life – in this case, a more fulfilling sex life.

However, as with all dreams, sexual dreams are seldom quite this obvious. If you awaken wondering why on earth you dreamed of being in bed with your boss, for instance, then the dream probably isn’t about desire, but about something else going on inside you.

All about you
The thing to remember is that most dream symbols represent parts of you. Take that naughty dream about your boss – it probably represents your need to take control of your career. In other words, you’re merging with your inner boss, so to speak. The same can be true of doing the wild thing with a wild animal in a dream. You’re embracing your instinctual side, which can be a source of creativity – or a symbol of undisciplined behavior you need to reign in. Celebrities fall into this category as well. If you dream of having sex with someone famous, ask yourself what you admire – or despise! – about this person. Chances are, that quality is being awakened in you.

Your beloved
On the other hand, dreams of sex with your significant other can reveal the health of your intimate connection. Take note of how you feel upon waking. Positive feelings point to a healthy sexual bond. Waking up feeling angry or frustrated is a warning sign that something’s amiss in your relationship. Hidden feelings can surface in dreams, so do some soul-searching to see if there’s an issue you need to talk over with your partner.

Gender bender
Dreams of merging with the opposite sex can also symbolize the merging of opposite “halves” of your psyche. If you’re a woman, you’re integrating the male (assertive, analytical, logical) part of your psyche. If you’re a man, you’re accessing the female (receptive, nurturing, passive) side of yourself. The more balanced you are, the more mental and emotional resources you’ll have at your disposal.

Strangers
What about doing the deed with someone you don’t know? Strangers usually represent the awakening of a trait or talent that you’re presently unaware of. Again, note any feelings you have about the dream. This will reveal whether the trait is something you want to develop – or a troubling issue you need to resolve.

Dr. Freud
Of course, sex dreams don’t have to include a living partner. Inanimate objects can be naughty, too. Freud wrote that dreams about pointy objects – swords, bananas, snakes and the like – usuallly have to do with the penis. Likewise, ovens, caves and crevices can symbolize the vagina. Dream symbols can be highly personal, so you may have your own array of sex symbols that depict your sexual energy.

So the next time your naughty side emerges in a dream, ask yourself if it reveals something about your sexuality or primary relationship, or if it reveals a quality you’re developing. Sexy dreams can be both fun and enlightening, after all!

I had a dream that angels were dancing, surrounding me in an enclosed circle. Their white gowns were flowing, and all but one angel wore a mint-green gown. I couldn’t see their faces, just the backs of their heads.

Jeanette in Glassport

Hello Jeanette,

What an enchanting dream! There’s a protective aura about it because of the enclosed circle. Angels are protectors of humans, so your dream seems to be telling you that you’re surrounded by loving and protective spiritual influences. Perhaps you couldn’t see their faces because angels are ultimately unknowable. And dancing is pure joy. I think the dream came to you to inspire your faith and instill it with a sense of joy. As for the green gown, green often represents healing, so there’s a healing influence surrounding you as well. Perhaps you have some healing ability yourself. At the very least, you have a strong connection with your spiritual life.

Sweet dreams,
Cortney

I have been having a recurring dream about my deceased mother/stepdad, father/stepmom. These dreams are intensely violent and disturbing. I am always angry about them trying to take my home away, leaving me or taking money from me. Also, I very often fly in my dreams. Not wing-flapping flying, I just think hard to elevate myself and have to stay focused on my destination and not look down, or I know I’ll fall and die. The dreams often occur with other family members in the background, as well as my ex-husband and in-laws. I know this haunts my sleep and I awaken very tired and frightened often.

Robin in Modesto (a Virgo)

Hello Robin,

The obvious question is, do the dreams reflect any unresolved feelings you have about your deceased relatives? Did your family continually let you down when they were alive? As for the flying, this may symbolize your attempts to rise above – or escape – the anger, which you’ll need to deal with at some point. Another way to look at the dream is that your parents and in-laws may represent your “inner” parent, the critical side of your personality that tells you what you should or shouldn’t do. You indicated you’re a Virgo, a sign that’s often critical and controlling. Perhaps if you lighten up on yourself for being less than perfect, the dreams will leave you in peace.

Sweet dreams,
Cortney

I dreamt I was walking along a beach I know well at night, with a long line of people. They were gypsies. They spoke quietly among themselves. I was not one of them. We walked in a column up the beach and under a tunnel. Suddenly I was alone, wheeling a bicycle upward on the track. A derelict house stood across the track and I could not pass. There were people living in the house, including a very pretty gypsy girl and her husband, whose head was a skull! They were both very helpful. I was embarrassed at having to wheel my bike through their house, and he was embarrassed because he knew how he looked. They helped me very quietly and gently to get through the house to the other side.

From Jane in Dublin

Hello Jane,

First of all, how do you feel about gypsies? Are they wanderers to you? Are they adventurous or unpredictable? I believe the gypsies are a part of you, perhaps the part that’s spontaneous, freethinking (the skull!) and likes to explore new things. Because you felt separate from them and embarrassed to be in their house, I don’t think you’re entirely comfortable with this part of yourself. Still, in order to get to where you needed to go, you had to enter their world so they could help you on your journey. So whatever “track” (path) you’ve taken in waking life, you will need your inner gypsy to get there.

Sweet dreams,
Cortney

In my dream, I am standing on pearls and diamonds, extending as far as my eye can see. My hair and dress are being blown by a fresh wind, and I have a man with me, probably my boyfriend. We are holding hands.

Barbara in the United Kingdom

Hello Barbara,

The pearls and diamonds symbolize what you value. Standing on these precious gemstones is most likely a message about your foundation, especially pertaining to relationships. You certainly value close ties and have a positive attitude about love. However, because you’re not touching the ground, you might ask yourself if you’re expecting too much from your boyfriend. Sometimes love requires us to walk through muddy emotional waters when the perfect stage of the relationship inevitably wears off. Still, the dream bodes well for your self-confidence in being able to sustain a successful relationship – if you come back down to earth once in a while.

Sweet dreams,
Cortney

I dream I’m married to my boyfriend, Manish. Immediately after the marriage ceremony, he takes me on a train. We have some of his friends along with us. I am given the middle berth in the compartment, and my husband (my boyfriend) is on the lower berth. Also, I am pregnant even though we haven’t had a physical relationship. We are in the train for many days.

Finally, I ask my husband to take me away from the train as I am not comfortable there because I’m pregnant. My husband takes me to a house where he is sitting on the ground and preparing for lunch. Apart from our bedroom, there were two other bedrooms in the house. I ask my husband, whose bedrooms are these? He said that his two friends (bachelors) are also staying in the house. I show discomfort with this because I’ll be the only lady in the house.

Pooja in Delhi, India

Hello Pooja,

Is your intuition telling you that your boyfriend isn’t ready for marriage? The fact that his bachelor friends were along for the train ride and then were living with you may symbolize your boyfriend’s lack of maturity. Plus, the middle compartment you were assigned may mean you’re caught in the middle between your boyfriend and his friends. Being pregnant while still on the train reflects your feelings of being in transition in your relationship, when you’d rather be settled in your own home. Perhaps it’s time to have a discussion with your boyfriend on his expectations about marriage to see if they are aligned with yours.

Sweet dreams,
Cortney

I had a dream about white owls, which were following me everywhere I went. At one point, this huge owl came out of the sky and just sat down next to me. It was like 4 feet tall. Also, ever since then, when someone gets really sick, like finding out they have cancer, I see white butterflies around me.

Kathy in North Tonawanda (DOB 6/18)

Hello Kathy,

In dreams and in waking life, owls are often messengers that bring wisdom from the spirit worlds. Because your owls were white, the symbol of purity and spirituality, they offered a message about your spiritual gifts. One gift you seem to have is the foretelling of illness in others. I think the 4-foot owl wanted to get your attention so you’d know the dream was important. Butterflies can also be messengers, especially about change. Or perhaps your butterflies are the angels surrounding the person who is ill. Most important, as a Gemini born on June 18, part of your destiny is to communicate your wisdom and knowledge. So focusing on your intuitive abilities and communication skills will help you walk your spiritual path.

Sweet dreams,
Cortney

Jean in Calistoga writes:

I was at my office in San Francisco – looking out our plate glass window – we’re on the top floor with a beautiful view. All of a sudden I heard this engine gear-down outside the panoramic glass windows. I thought it was a plane (reminiscent of 9/11) but upon closer inspection, it was a very large helicopter (not military – very fancy). Others and I looked out in horror and saw it starting to fishtail downward. Then we could see this spray of bullets coming up toward the helicopter (like spotlights) from the street below. I never felt in danger – I wondered for a split second if the helicopter would hit our windows, but never thought it would harm me. I was simply horrified at what I was witnessing. Others were around – not sure who except one of the owners of my company.

Dear Jean,
That is a most intriguing dream! I wonder if this one is a commentary on the economy (did you have any conversations about the economic downturn earlier in the day)? People living “fancy” (helicopter) lifestyles – which perhaps they can’t afford – will be “shot down” by the “bullets” of escalating prices, recession, etc. Your dream is telling you that your job, however, is safe. Then again, if you see a helicopter going down outside your window, then that’s another kind of dream entirely.

Sweet dreams!
Cortney
