Want a Cure for Boredom? Your Prescription is Ready.

Television programming, the internet, and the streets of our major cities are snapping, crackling and popping with stimuli: advertisements for things to do, get, buy, all towards the singular end of being happy. Thus, when we begin to feel that inexplicable hunger or emptiness growing inside us we immediately want to fill it with something. We are inclined to do something differently, to do something more, or to look for a new toy or experience.

Perhaps we send charges of excitement into our inner black hole by hooking our senses up to any technological or media outlet we can find, whether it’s Facebook, the latest reality show or the newest mp3 download by our favorite group. Maybe we do something as seemingly innocuous as going to a movie or registering for a class. Read the rest of this entry »

The Best Strategies Against Verbal Abuse

July 30, 2011 at 5:00 am
By Alina Mikos

Whether the ambush comes from someone plagued with jealousy, a social anxiety disorder, or an inferiority complex, you owe it to yourself to neutralize—and not internalize—the verbal attack. Here are a few strategies that are sure to stop that verbal bully in his tracks.

Strategy 1: Emotional Balance Strategy

When facing off with someone who is verbally abusive, it is important to center your emotions and your confidence. A predator is always searching for prey, and if you expose yourself as having low self-esteem, the verbal abuser will be tempted to attack that weakness. Take a moment to fortify your mental gates by boosting your self-confidence; if you are able to focus on your strengths and the respect and love you have for yourself, the verbal attacks will fail to breech those iron mental defenses thus preventing serious emotional injury. Heal Through Kundalini Yoga

July 30, 2011 at 5:00 am
By Taryn Galewind

The Ancient Indian Solution for Self-Improvement

At the base of your spine is a coiled energy called “kundalini.” This center holds a warm energy that can flow gently up your body, through your head and out into the universe, bringing you peace and balance. Hindu mythology tells of a goddess called Kundalini—a serpent. She exists coiled around the first or base chakra.

Kundalini, both the Goddess and the energy, erupts in times of crisis or peril and rages into a flaming strength and power to protect or heal you. That giant kick in the psyche, my friends, could be daunting if you’re unprepared or unaware.

Kundalini yoga, as taught by an experienced practitioner, can get you acquainted with this amazing resource and add an incredible weapon to your holistic healing arsenal. The burn of kundalini is thought to superheat your chakras—and may actually smoke out a cold, overpower a fever, and vaporize stuff that blocks or unbalances your energy system. Some people report that kundalini yoga brought feeling back to body parts that were numb. Some claim kundalini is the power that allows a person to find strength enough to lift up an automobile and save the life of a person in peril. Read the rest of this entry »

Change Your Outlook on Life: Optimism 101

Optimists tend to look on the bright side. They value lemons for their awesome flavor and feel grateful that their glass is half full, never nearly empty. Looking at life optimistically can impact both mental and physical health. Balancing your optimism with realism keeps you stay in tune with the universe, and a positive mental attitude can bring you good fortune in business and in love. Try these seven lucky keys to unlock a new you.

1. See the positive in everything. If your lover walks out, you can wail and weep, or embrace the opportunity to find a better match or a chance to get to know what you really need in a partner.

2. Take a risk. Don’t always make the safest choices—step outside your envelope of comfort. Financial advisers tell clients to take the biggest acceptable risk. Decide what you can tolerate, then take your giant leap, always expecting to fly. Read the rest of this entry »

Coming Back to Your Body

Ever wake up and think, “This is not my body”? It’s happened to most of us. One day the toll of the years, or inattention, or discomfort, or disconnection shows up all at once and we find ourselves feeling alienated from our own skin, muscle, bone, nerves, and cells. What can be done when you have a “This is not my beautiful house” moment with your body?

Be In the Moment: Take an Acting Class

Get Out of Your Head and Into the Scene

The arts have long been regarded as a source of healing and regeneration. Take, for example, the ancient Greek word catharsis. Wrapped up in this word is the idea of purging potent and painful emotions and experiences from one’s psyche so as to reemerge renewed and healed. A great work of art, the Greeks believed, did just this, acting as a catalyst, a switch or trigger-point setting off the release of anguish, despair, anger and the like.

As it turns out, catharsis is not the only internal (psychological, spiritual) benefit of the arts. This can be seen in the burgeoning popularity of arts-based non-profits whose primary purpose is to help at-risk, disenfranchised and/or otherwise socially, cognitively and emotionally challenged young people. The Imperfection of Perfectionism

July 28, 2011 at 5:00 am
By Theresa Danna

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do your best, whether it’s a project at your job or a game of tennis with friends. It feels good to accomplish a goal, and often other people benefit from your efforts, too.

Problems creep into our lives when we feel that everything we do must meet strict, often self-imposed, standards. Behind the compulsion to always perform perfectly is fear—fear of not being accepted or loved by others if we fail. For some people, the addictive compulsion is to achieve a perfect weight or meet a physical beauty standard. But the underlying factor is the same: a belief that we are not good enough. 4 Steps to Find Balance

July 28, 2011 at 5:00 am
By Holly Allender Kraig

Dr. Phil might have one of the best phrases I’ve ever heard,“How’s that working for you?” I’ve used that phrase so many times when a friend guiltily explains how they haven’t dealt with a situation and wished they had or could. I usually throw in Dr. Phil’s famous five words. Although my friends love me and I love them, this phrase is my little reality slap in the face that some folks need. Stop letting life control you, and take control!

As Psychic Giovanna points out, when you’re in the middle of chaos, that is a great time to figure what’s going on. Don’t wait until you’re out of chaos, because that may take forever or be too late. Take a few moments, and stop to refocus where you want to go.
