Groundhog Day Forecast From Famous Rodent

Punxsutawney Phil, the world-famous mascot of Groundhog Day, has made his official prediction. After emerging from his burrow in the time-honored tradition, Mr. Phil saw his own shadow, signifying that New York has six more weeks of winter.

However—not so fast Punxsutawney—a challenger has appeared!

Charles G. Hogg, “Staten Island Chuck” to his fans, has cast a counter-prediction. Is a rumble inevitable?

Psychic Monkey Picks Gingrich!

Grandpa the Psychic Spider Monkey, the Staten Island Zoo’s new superstar, was tasked with psychically choosing the winner of the upcoming Republican primary, as we reported last week. His answer? Newt Gingrich.

MSNBC Reports:

Could Grandpa really know more than we do, or is this psychic monkey going senile?

Staten Island Zoo’s famous psychic spider monkey was challenged Monday by the New York Daily News to predict the winner of New Hampshire’s Republican primary. His choice? Newt Gingrich, who is currently polling at 8 percent, behind Rick Santorum (11 percent), Jon Huntsman (11 percent), Ron Paul (17 percent) and clear front-runner Mitt Romney (41 percent). Psychic Sheep Lays Claim to Psychic Animal Throne

You thought the psychic animal wars were over… oh yes, you did… but you thought wrong! Because yet another new challenger has appeared: Sonny, the Psychic Rugby Sheep, who makes predictions on rugby matches based on eating hay bags with the flags of the competing teams on them.

The Metro UK reports:

Sonny, named after All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams, makes his predictions by choosing to eat from one of a selection of hay bags bearing the national flags of each team playing in the 2012 Rugby World Cup.

Ever tried to read a dog’s paw? Turns out it’s not only possible, there’s also a precise method to doing it, and anybody can if they follow the right steps! Check out how to do it below.

eHow reports:

1. Choose a paw, traditionally a female dog’s left paw and a male’s right paw are read. Some schools teach that the dog’s dominant side will be a better way to get an accurate reading.

No Replacement Found for Paul the Psychic Octopus

The world thrilled to the antics of Paul the Octopus last year, the psychic cephalopod that correctly predicted a string of World Cup matches before his short two-year life came to an end. And it looks like there won’t be a reasonable replacement for the octopus any time soon… eight octopi who were recently auditioned for the replacement role failed to make the grade.

The Standard reports:

Since the death of Paul the Octopus, the unlikely star of last year’s men’s football World Cup, the nonhuman psychic business has become a little fishy. Many have tried to continue his legacy but just couldn’t follow in his footsteps.

The Race to Find the Next Psychic Octopus

The Search is On for the Next Great Octopoid Oracle

Paul, the Psychic Octopus who captured our hearts and minds not so long ago, has passed on—but his legend remains. So much so that, with the Women’s World Cup coming up in Germany, that a search has been announced for the next great psychic octopus, one capable of living up to the long shadow cast by the original seawater seer.

BBC Sport reports:

Paul captured global attention after he successfully predicted the results of all of Germany’s seven games at the 2010 World Cup, as well as the final. Each time he opened a box marked with the winning country’s flag and ate the mussel inside.

There are now eight contenders in the race to become the next ‘psychic’ octopus for the Women’s World Cup. One of the those in the running is Lola from France, aged around five months, who lives at the Sea Life Centre in Munich. Read the rest of this entry »

Psychic Sheep Saves Shepherd

After a long lull in psychic animal news, a new challenger appears: Alfie, the psychic sheep. But unlike more recent contenders, this one doesn’t predict sports victories—it detects cancer.

MetroUK reports:

Emma Turner was trying to give Alfie his medication when he repeatedly headbutted her in the chest. The five-year-old Cotswold, which is normally well behaved, had to be held down by Ms Turner and two others. When Ms Turner the resulting bruises checked by a doctor, she was found to be in the early stages of breast cancer.

‘The doctors and nurses said that if Alfie hadn’t done what he did, when he did it, I wouldn’t have found the lump for a few years, by which time it would have spread,’ said the 41-year-old. ‘Everyone at the hospital is convinced that Alfie saved my life.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Paul the Psychic Octopus Gets His Own Movie

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water… Paul the Psychic Octopus, last year’s breakout star in the world of psychic animals, who became world famous for correctly predicting the results of World Cup matches before his short life came to a close, is the subject of an upcoming biopic. Mark it up to the public fascination and love for the seewater seer—he’s also had  a statue permanently dedicated to his honor at the Olberhausen Zoo in Germany, the site of his famous predictions.

The upcoming film will not only focus on Paul’s life and the mania surrounding his winning streak of predictions, but will also purportedly tackle celebrity culture and the reality of psychic abilities, even among animals.

Time Magazine reports:

An upcoming biopic will tell the story of the clairvoyant cephalopod that gained instant celebrity status by calling outcomes of World Cup soccer matches last summer. Paul, the now-deceased octopus from a Sea Life Centre in Germany, accurately picked the winner of all seven games his country of residence played and predicted Spain as the overall victor of the 2010 World Cup.
