I was reading your letter about feathers. Just three days after my son was killed two years ago exactly (he was 36) I came home, and found an off white single feather on my doorstep. I did feel at the time that this was left for me by either my spirit guide or angel. Can you advise?

Evelyn in England

Actually, Evelyn, the feather was a message from your son.

The brief vision that accompanied your words was full of bright sunlight, which might be symbolic rather than actual. Your son was standing peacefully, looking around him and enjoying the sights and smells. And, by the way, this is the first time I’ve encountered a spirit enjoying fragrances, but he clearly was doing just that. Did he usually look younger than his age? Because your son showed himself to me as a man in his early 30′s at most.

After watching him reveling in the environment for a moment, I saw what appeared to be a robin grooming its breast on a branch nearby, and it caught his eye. As he watched, the bird dislodged a feather which began to float toward your son, and I could see him smile with warmth and humor as he decided to leave the feather for you as a message of love and renewal. The robin’s breast symbolizes the heart region, and the robin itself symbolizes the coming of spring and renewal. He somehow created small puffs of air which he used to navigate the feather to your doorstep, chuckling to himself as he kept the feather aloft like a juggler.

I’d like to encourage you to tuck this vision into your heart where you can reach it easily, and enjoy it often, because your son’s message of love is one that he still sends you daily. I can feel him, and his love all around you!

I come from a very traditional background but I’m also quite an unconventional person and an artist at heart. I think most of my life I’ve followed my heart but it’s always been hindered by my head and doing the “right” thing. Recently I’ve had some real tornados hit me including an ex who fit my parent’s expectations and who I loved as well- one day talking marriage and gaining my family’s acceptance and the next cutting me off in a cruel way.

Prior to meeting him, I was in love with someone who was probably the opposite of all the “right” conventions and in the end the societal and familial pressures won out. I’m far from being a teenager anymore but I’m feeling very rebellious right now and questioning a lot still in my career and in love. Can my guides tell me anything to help clear some of the tornado wreckage or at least tell me where to find the ruby slippers to take me home to my heart?

Jeannette in Washington

Dear Jeannette,

Before I give the floor to your guides I just want to say that you have a real gift for imagery, and your artistic gifts show even in this short note.

Your guides and angels (and relatives … including one woman who wants with everything in her for you to do the things she never dared do!) smilingly told me that your choice of Dorothy’s trip to Oz is a perfect allegory for your present journey and its powerful possibilities. The Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Lion and Dorothy herself all learned to overcome cultural assumptions about who they were, and what was possible for them, to come home to themselves.

Next, they said: “Jeannette, a person’s birth family is not always their true family. Your tornado is lifting you out of a bleak and uncomfortable existence and will – if you let it – plunk you down in an artistic world of color and light where you will encounter the companions of your heart and discover the true source of power. Unlike Dorothy, however, your true home is not in Kansas. You will always maintain connections with your birth family, but your path is very different from theirs. Not all, but many family members will come to accept your choices and remain a loving and supportive part of your life.”

Then your guides explained that even in a tornado you have a powerful influence if you focus on where you’re going and what you want, rather than on what you want to leave behind, or what has been denied you. They say that your rebellious feelings are timely and appropriate – let them recharge you with light and purpose, and direct those “out of the box” energies into your art and your inner and outer renewal. You have exciting times ahead of you.

As for the wreckage you’re working on clearing up… Your guides have shown me a picture of the wreckage, and it’s got at least 5 paths leading away from it, and each is headed toward a beautiful landscape. There’s a brilliant sunset at the end of one path, a twilight beach at another, a sunny hill like the Tarot Sun card for another (symbolizing either personal wholeness, marriage, or both), then a cool forest path next to a stream, and finally a steep and craggy mountain pass. I’m sure your artistic sensibilities will recognize and easily interpret each of these possible paths. When you’re starting fresh, as you are Jeannette, you get to choose. Just step out of the rubble and try one. Heck, try them all!

Wonderful! I’m so glad you decided to add this column. I have a question I would like to ask my spirit guides. How or when will my own “awakening” occur? I so want to be in service of the light and need guidance as to how is the best way for me to get there.

Dear Tina,

Your guides tell me that your awakening began long ago, and continues every moment of your life. They asked me to tell you, “Awakening is rarely an event, but is usually a journey rather than a destination or arrival point. With every kind word and compassionate hearing you are in service to the light, and you have many opportunities ahead of you to choose specific tasks and paths which particularly appeal to you and suit your gifts. But remember, your opportunities for meaningful and significant service occur in every moment.”

They then gave me a lovely image, which they suggest you use as a regular meditation. It does, as symbolic images do, contain a great deal of information – layers and layers of it – and by visiting the image frequently you will be able to mine all the precious elements for your use. By the way, the image is holographic, and they suggest that when you meditate you come in to it from different directions, including from outside yourself, as well as down and up, because there are surprising elements which they will introduce to guide and teach you. Take note of what approaches you and what happens, and then see how it relates to events in your life. And you can use it as a way to develop clear communication with your guides! Use your imagination and play…

Here’s the image: you are rising in a lovely turquoise sea (as you know, the sea represents the unconscious, and also symbolizes the source of all life). You are ascending slowly from the dark depths to the light at the surface, and you rise gently through beams of light that shoot down from the surface. You are in no hurry, because you are so immersed in the beauty that surrounds you, and the experience of being an integral part of the boundless ocean is perfect, and enough. With your hair floating around you, you raise your face to the light and let yourself remain perfectly relaxed, because you know that your natural buoyancy will take you to the surface at exactly the right pace.

Your guides tell me that “as long as you follow your heart, and your intuition, you will move steadily toward your dream of complete awakening, sharing blessings and healing with others as you go.”

Enjoy your journey!

Right now (like so many others) I am unemployed. I have no idea which way to turn. I’m not really sure in which direction of employment I need to go. Please, please help me with some direction. Thank you so much.

Peace, Donna

Dear Donna,

Your spirit guides gave me the first bit of information before I finished reading your note, they were so eager for you to hear it. “Accept the help that is offered to you. There is no shame for you, who gives so much support to others, to receive it yourself. If you fear obligation, know that the help is freely given, and that you will find a way to give in return that satisfies your need for balance.”

Next, your guides showed me your energy field and explained why you’re having trouble finding your way out of this dilemma. They say that one of the biggest challenges for you, and for anyone affected by our present economic crisis, is how to be effective when in the grip of very natural panic and fear. Fear is about fight or flight, not strategic thinking, effective networking and the kind of presentation and communication you need to land a good job.

They go on to say: “As hard as it is to find calm and centeredness when bedeviled by bill collectors and worried about your rent, you must establish that calm. At present your excellent intuition and instincts are unable to help you at all, because they cannot get through to you. We see you pushing energy out hastily in a thousand different directions, scattering rather than lasering in on a few likely targets. There is no right or wrong direction, but there are effective choices, and those are made by your desires and instincts. And call on us! We will help you whenever you ask.”

Spirit guides can sometimes seem frustratingly impractical, so I’ll tack on a couple of impressions they gave me while I listened. First, you might not be able to get one well-paying solution just yet, but if you look around for fun and offbeat possibilities, you can get a few small solutions going pretty easily. And second, for a number of reasons, the more you hurry and push the less you’ll accomplish. Work smart, not hard, accept help, take good care of yourself, and go where your instincts, dreams and desires lead you. They, not the classified section, hold your answers.

Good luck, Donna!

Karla in Las Vegas writes:

How many spirit guides do I have and what are their name(s)? I’d like to ask them these questions: 1) Am I on the right path? 2) How come I’m always so irritable? and 3) What can I do (aside from meditating) to really know my spirit guides are present?

Dear Karla,

Actually, you have several spirit guides, but only the two main ones stepped forward to talk. I’m told the others are “special project” guides. Your first guide is named Ezra, an older man with glasses perched on the end of his nose, who is dressed in the manner of a United States founding father. He says he is an expert on the metaphysics that inspired and guided Washington, Jefferson and Franklin, among others.

Your other guide is a Native American woman dressed in traditional garb, named Summer. She has your answers, and she used the Hopi Medicine Wheel as a way to explain them. Her basic answer is that you’re not quite on the right path at the moment, and that’s the main reason you’re irritable most of the time.

The frustrations and complications you experience happen mostly because the approach you’ve learned doesn’t suit who you really are. She says you are headed East and for now you should adjust your course to go East-Southeast. There’s a lot of information in that answer, but basically it means you’re too much in your head and you need to broaden your understanding of how spiritual energy works to open understanding and clear obstacles.

Your guides agree that the best way to build a relationship with them is first to get to know the symbols they use, the Medicine Wheel and the Masonic metaphysics of Benjamin Franklin and the others. For example, if you learn what the directions of the Medicine Wheel mean, and what plants and animals are allied with each direction, then Summer can send messengers to you that you can learn to interpret. You can also understand the answer regarding your path in more depth.

The rest is work and practice, because they also want you to learn to recognize their energy signatures. Ask questions, and keep a journal of messages, your sense of their meaning, and how the energy felt. That way you should develop a very workable communication style for the three of you.

Have fun on this adventure!
