In addition, I got a year full of health issues. I felt terrible physically and emotionally, and my parents were hurting financially. But, the good news was that I was alive, and all my limbs worked! I had to be really thankful for that. Then, the hospital began harassing my parents to make more than $10 a month payments toward the bill. If that bill collector hadn’t been so unnecessarily forceful, my parents may have gone bankrupt because of me.

3. First Love Freak Out

At 17, I lost my virginity to the boy I met when I was in the 6th grade. Going After Your Dreams

You can do extraordinary things and lead a most exciting life. That may be the reason you were put on this Earth. When I was just out of college, I hated my life, my job, my lover, and probably myself. I felt what used to be called ennui. I felt suppressed. Time hung heavy on my hands. Nothing I did seemed worth the time it took to do. But, raised by ultra conservative parents, I had learned to give a man a day’s work for a day’s pay and meet other people’s expectations. A job. A home. A dog and 2.5 children.

I had the job, the car, a nice apartment. I was a national training director for a major American company, and I was only 25 years old. What else could a young woman want?

My dream. I wanted to be a writer. But a rough road ran between 20th Century women and publishing success. How could I compete? I didn’t know anything about myself or my world or life in general. One day, I decided to change all that.

I quit my job, sublet my apartment and turned everything I owned into cash. With one large suitcase, I boarded a Yugoslavian freight ship to cross the Atlantic from Bayonne, N.J. We would sail the ocean blue and disembark in an undetermined port in Spain, Yugoslavia or Africa.

I actually went to all those places and more. The long and short of that story is I spent a year and a half living in everything from a three person pleasure boat to a one room bungalow on the island of Crete, with no toilet and a faucet sticking out of the wall over a metal pan. I got into a little trouble, met fascinating people, saw things I’ll remember forever, and worked my way through six countries before returning to New York with 65 cents and a half pack of cigarettes to my name.

Happy ending? For sure. I never went back to corporate America, though they invited me to. Ultimately, I married, acquired a home, and had three incredible kids. I also became a prolific, well-paid, full-time writer. It took me a few years, but I knew myself and what I wanted. I knew my dream. I had reached for the courage to do what I had to do to make it happen, even when it was scary.

Dear Kim,

You’ve been going through a lot, physically and emotionally, but simplify your processes by separating the physical and tangible from the emotional and unseen. Sure, it’s all connected—two hemispheres of the same ball of wax, but each hemisphere of that ball needs to be tended to differently than its counterpart.

Basically, it looks like you feared or faced death. Actually, it looks like both. You’re strong, Kim, because you have survived things that others would not have. Yes, your doctors are good and the sciences used are strong, but that’s not why you’re still here, my friend. It’s my personal theory that for some of us the body must fail in some manner before we can truly grasp the delicate beauty of life that we cannot see. Your health issues have changed you, so now it’s time to clear away the clouds of confusion and permit yourself to live fully.

There is a strong bond between you and your Allan, and there always will be. There are past-life cords as well as this-life cords. Should you decide to reinvest in him and this relationship, I have nothing that says that course of action is harmful or a mistake. Even at the worst of times of your relationship and divorce, the ties that bind did not sever, and not just because of your children. Truthfully, when looking forward at you and Allan, your children really don’t come into play. This is a very good thing, because it indicates a rejuvenation of the relationship that is not internally justified or supported by guilt or desire in a family sense. It’s deeper, and more primal. A true connection. If you want to leap and look back, you have the option to fully embrace this relationship, and even move back in. However, because you are still in a state of personal transition, I want to encourage you not to leap, but to allow things to unfold. You’re still healing yourself physically, and discovering who you are as much as who you want to be, in the sense of spirit. Reuniting your family isn’t a bad plan, mind you, but once you’re back under one roof, the path will be set. The opportunity isn’t going anywhere, so time is on your side. There aren’t any wrong choices here, only choices. So take your time about things, and enjoy the process without pressure, and you’ll be able to look back with clarity and without question. This is YOUR life too, you know.

Since much of your energy and outlook appears to be focused on change, stability and safety, let the understanding and knowing come. It could hit you in a few weeks, or in a few months. But there is a big difference in knowing what you want and what you want to achieve, as well as what will be beneficial to just you, and then forging ahead because it seems like time, and you don’t want to miss a potential opportunity.

Life without clarity isn’t always fully living, sometimes it’s gambling, and gambling can create chaos. To me, it looks like you’ve had enough chaos, even though it’s through chaos that many, you included, find clarity. It’s truly when you are clear and certain in the present that history doesn’t dictate or interfere, and that’s what leads you to joy. Your body may have led you to your spirit, but it’s your spirit that allows happiness and balance in your being and in your self. Greetings, Amy, and thank you so much for this inquiry. Your observation is astute. Although situations and temperaments will differ widely depending on the particulars of a situation, the overall trend appears very much in favor of your thesis; men do tend to forgive their partner’s infidelities while women have a much harder time letting such things go. Now, we’re not the first to note this difference in the sexes, and there may well be more than a few reasons for it, but the main reason… the most riveting reason… will take us on a perilous journey deep into the very heart of ancient female enigma. I’m afraid it won’t be pretty nor will it be viewed as politically correct, but I will not shirk from giving my most honest answer on that account.

The prime reason for this marked difference between the male and female reaction to an extramarital affair resides, at least for those of us born and raised in Western culture, in historical perception and value placement. From a very early point in our male-dominated society, women have been subjected to a bloodbath of sexual competition, not just to obtain prize mates for the propagation of the species but also for the very survival of the female herself. For thousands of years, women lived with the burden of knowing there was no alternate means of supporting themselves or their children should they find themselves mate-less. Thanks to this ugly reality, women tend to see extramarital affairs as a good deal more threatening and insulting than a man might. Having historically much more to lose, they are far less inclined to forgive in an age where they no longer have to.

Our passage away from tribal roots happened a very long time ago, but we still tend to enact many of the rites and rituals of our ancestors, dressing them up with modern nuances and customs. The truth of the matter is a husband is far more likely to forgive an affair because he knows the other man is probably NOT looking to get his wife to leave her family for him. In fact, a woman who is safely wedded to another is often considered a better choice by men looking for sex rather than a relationship. He gets to have the passion, and her husband can bear the burden of giving her a commitment. This is not to say that men don’t get jealous. They can and certainly do, just usually not enough to subject themselves to a costly divorce and the loss of a good help-mate.

On the other hand… For a woman whose husband is sleeping with another woman, the matter is very different. This woman knows the woman her husband is sleeping with is a genuine threat to the family unit. No woman ever has an affair with a man with no strings attached. Almost without exception, she will be looking to seduce him away from his family. Make no mistake, even a one night stand with a cocktail waitress is very seldom “just sex” to the waitress. It is a very ancient, very competitive game; one forced on women by men from very early times. When we moved away from our tribal roots, women lost the protection of the collective; the right for her and her off-spring to be provided for equally as members of the tribe. What took the place of that system was a male dominate/female dependent standard, giving a single woman literally no choice in her own survival. Men controlled that just as they controlled her reproduction and progeny via the enforcement of religious law. For a woman to have food and shelter, she had to mate with one man. If she was the only wife in the scenario, then she’d better be sure that man didn’t start bedding with other women who might look to take her place… Or that he didn’t start taking too many other wives, thus cutting into her and her children’s piece of the pie… And so the archetypal pattern of female competition became embedded. We can talk all we want about liberation and modern understanding, but many of these ancient patterns are still in play. Even if material survival isn’t an issue, every woman knows somewhere in the back of her mind that young girl checking out her man is looking to destroy her happiness and take her place.

So you see, Amy, women tend to put more value on infidelity than men because to them it’s a far bigger deal, and it leaves a far deeper wound. It’s hard for a woman to forgive a husband who has an affair, because that affair is seen as a blatant disregard for her survival, a devaluation of her very life. We old Savannah apes still hear the echoes of our distant past. And if this is true, then one day, perhaps women will listen back far enough to reconnect with the independent power still stored deep in their reptilian brains and break free of the perversions and deceptions of patriarchy that tell them they cannot survive without a man to look after them. Maybe. One can dream anyway.

Understanding Life’s Hardest Lesson

I recently lost my best friend to illness. She was thirty-seven going on eighteen, with an eleven-year-old daughter. Carol was funny, sensitive, caring. Also a thief, a liar and a drug addict. I loved and conflicted with her, but the love always won out. She’d do anything for me, and always answered my 2 a.m. phone calls. We talked about everything, but mostly our pets.

I knew she didn’t have long. She’d been sick for years, finally on a feeding tube and going to the hospital every other week to stay for a few days while they tried to raise her weight and stop intestinal blockages. I kept thinking about how I’d known her for twenty-eight years, how we had good and bad times, how I couldn’t watch her drown in her addiction to pain medications, and I only called rather than stopped by.

Then she died on a Thursday night at 9:45.

I dreamed about a call with her. It was one of the good calls. We connected; we talked about everything. Then I remembered she’d passed. I wondered how we could be talking. I woke up. The last few times I’d had a living conversation with her, she’d opened up about her life more than ever. It had seemed like she was coming back to life from her sickness, but that’s not the way it happened.

All of us deal with dying differently. Many people rely on their personal beliefs to carry them through losing someone close to them to death. If you have lost a loved one, I suggest looking for things you wouldn’t normally notice. On a trip two weeks after Carol died, I found a stone for sale in a store. Look for signs, and when you find them, (and you will), don’t feel sad. That’s my advice. Rejoice the person is still around, revel in the fact you know he or she will meet you again. The people who died don’t want you to be sad. Well, maybe a little, in Carol’s case. She always loved attention, especially of the morbid kind! When those people remind you in little ways they’re still around, grin to yourself, maybe shed a tear you can’t call them and laugh with them.

And if that’s not enough, you can get in touch with your spiritual side. I believe everyone has it. If you pray, say a prayer to your passed loved one. You may hear, somewhere in your mind when it’s quiet, a response. It may sound like a thought. This is what mediums like us do. Don’t worry about being wrong or right, justified or following a belief set for you a long time ago. Death teaches nothing’s expected or known, as does the birth of a child.

On the day of Carol’s funeral, my old college roommate gave birth to her first baby. Get Your Love Life Together by Getting Yourself Together!

A common theme with my callers is romance and attracting a mate. It’s natural to want to find that perfect (or perfect enough) traveling companion with whom to share life’s journey. In trying to find that special someone, we often get our hearts stomped on (sometimes repeatedly) and it can be hard to not get a little jaded after a time. Sometimes that jadedness, that negativity, gets carried along into the next relationship and weighs it down like a brick on a bird’s back.

The Love That We Love

As we approach Valentine’s Day this year, we are facing some very exciting and unpredictable possibilities in love. Venus, the planet of love, is in the fiery sign of Aries with the planet of sudden changes Uranus. This means that new love can happen suddenly, unexpectedly and out of the blue. All of this is conjoined with the South Node and part of a large bowl formation giving focus, ease and a sense of having known each other before that makes things flow easily and keep flowing without break. When planets fall in the 4th house, a relationship will feel very comfortable and at home with each other. The two benefics Venus (love) and Jupiter (happiness) are essentially angular in their first meeting chart, giving them lots of positive energy to draw on endlessly.

Greetings, Kathryn. Your question can be approached from many different angles, any one of which would be thought provoking. Actually, it puts me in mind of some of the female clients I have who hail from Russia and Eastern Europe. Upon immigrating to the US, these poor women find themselves utterly lost and astounded by the childish habits of our indigenous male. Indeed, it could be surmised that from the advent of industrialization, most males in our society have been intentionally kept weak and needy—particularly on the emotional level. However, when considering this phenomena, it must be remembered that men and women look for very different traits in what they consider to be top of the line mates. Women seek men with advanced degrees, status, social accolades and access to money. Men seek youthfulness, sensuality, physical attractiveness and sexual expression as a general rule. In other words, if a woman chooses to arm herself with intellect, status and wealth as a tool to luring the typical Western male, she’s going to be in for a very rude awakening.

Now it might seem to follow that a needy, “broken down” man would naturally gravitate toward a strong female, and I certainly agree that on a subconscious level that trend does seem evident. Some men just yearn more for the teat of security and tight boundaries than others. And if the fellow is not by nature a novelty seeker, he might surely be drawn to women who are of a stronger and more self-sufficient temperament. Women of means have to be very careful of this sort of fellow, for a particularly nasty subdivision of the type is the ever growing breed called the “parasitic male” who prowl the Internet and the clubs, searching high and low for women like yourself. These are the ones who are always “in between projects” or “looking for backers” for some deal or other or are “trying to break into” acting or modeling or some such thing. They’re always quite charming, often good-looking and completely endearing sorts that you must avoid like the plague.

The sad truth is, no matter a woman’s status or personal strength or whatever, most men she will encounter here on a level playing field will be a bit lacking in some department. We have no real rites of passage in our culture for our young men to clue them in to the fact that it is time for them to take the mantle of manhood. Our hunting rituals are growing obsolete and our tribal male aspect all but dead. But before you despair completely, remember that the mating ritual hasn’t always been about the male being above or even equal to his mate right from the start. There is the very old and deeply rooted archetype of the Conquering Hero. You know the one. He’s always a kitchen boy or the youngest son of a peasant widow or some such thing. And in order to win the highborn princess, he must undergo a great quest beset with danger to save the kingdom and often the princess herself. If he wins, then he proves himself worthy to mate the royal maiden, and perhaps even become king. The point is, in all of those stories, the boy becomes a man for the sake of the lady. The process of slaying the dragon or facing the Black Knight takes him into his deepest fear. It forces him to go beyond himself for the sake of another. Sometimes it means even a sacrifice so great, that his own self… his own life… is of no consequence. When the hero makes his journey, he learns to put others first, and in doing so he becomes a man. Only then does he obtain his desire. Only then does he get the girl. We have a lot of young squires in American culture; a lot of warriors in waiting. What we need is more women to think of themselves as prizes worth fighting for… worth growing up for… so these poor fellows will know what they have to do to get a worthy mate. In any case, don’t be so quick to cast off the ones who appear weak. There might be a hero just waiting to happen inside them.

A couple of weeks ago, I closed out my storage bin. Are You Giving Up On Yourself?
