My problem is that I must turn away a suitor who is the husband of a close friend. The difficulty arises in that I am quite vulnerable to the attentions of this man, and although I believe he is sincere about his feelings for me, and that he is unhappy in his circumstances, I must convincingly dissuade him from pursing me. Greetings, Lucinda. I will attempt to be very precise and specific in my answer as you request. It is a sumptuous scenario you present and yet, I can’t help but wonder as to the motivation that prods you to make such an inquiry of me. Certainly you write as though you have been diligent and thorough in your own observation. You appear to stand stalwart in your decision as to what the proper, ethical response to the matter is that you must have. And yet, in careful reading of your query, I find myself thinking that you aren’t nearly so certain of things as you would like me, or yourself, to believe. With that in mind, let me attempt an illumination of sorts.

First and foremost, it appears to me that you really want to believe in the old tales of forbidden love and star-crossed tragedy. It’s a favorite subject of my own, so I applaud your interest. However, I warn you to be wary as you indulge yourself in old tales and legends. If you fail to watch closely, you’re very likely to paint yourself into an archetypal corner where you lose sight of the more pragmatic and fundamental factors in play. Archetypes are subconscious patterns that represent the deep dark corners of our instinct, desire and fear. From what I see, you are attempting to play one of the most dangerous archetypal roles with absolutely no understanding of the true substance driving the play. I have looked at this man and his marriage, and it’s not as bad as you assume. You want it to be bad, because that’s part of the tragedy. I mean, it would hardly be a romantic story if he and his wife got on just fine, now would it? I know, he told you his marriage is rocky. Do you know why? Because he’s a man. And men, being men, like to get gullible women into bed. They say all sorts of things… make all sorts of promises… in that endeavor. It amazes me, as savvy as we have become in understanding subconscious motivation and human behavior, that so many women still can be gotten so easily with a little game playing and an “I Love You” or two. The fact is, this man has no desire to leave his wife. What he wants is to have a small, manageable harem to bed down with. Three is a good number for most men his age: a wife, a mistress and a skanky youngster to spend money on. You’re being groomed for the mistress role. You run, he chases. And if he lies to you in the right way, plays the game well and caters to your ego, he’ll catch you in the end. You’ll torture yourself, betraying all your supposed ethics in a bid to catch him in return, but he will never… and I mean never… leave his wife.

As I see it, you can make some sound decisions now that will spare you all this pointless turmoil. You can turn him away once and for all. But if you chose that path, then just get on with it, and quit bemoaning the fact. Find someone else to hang out with. Period. Or, you can stop all the game playing and just sleep with him. In that case, you can relax and enjoy a relationship that might last a few months. Without all the courtship rituals and chasing you’ve been indulging in, the two of you have about two months of mating flare before it burns out. After that, you can walk away with all that tension gone. My guess is you’re going to ignore both suggestions and continue the drama. It seems that’s what you’re really after anyway, which is too bad, because many nice and actually available men exist. But maybe life just isn’t complicated enough for you.

Valentines’ Schmalentines

It is upon us again, the “day of the lovers.” If you are married and in a relationship, you’ll tend to look forward to it; well, unless your other half forgets about it altogether. Amy Winehouse’s chart is approaching a Saturn return which brings completion in the area of career, so she has a good chart to win, even with her sad passing. The possibility for success is improved by Tony Bennett’s chart, as the Sun is in exact conjunction with his natal Jupiter, spotlighting him. The strongest astro-competition to Winehouse/Bennett comes from Christina Aguilera. In other categories and sky expressions, Nicki Minaj stands out as a silvery moon goddess even with her stiff competition and Beyonce’s “sexy earth mother” chart also could bring her a trophy this year.

A fleet of robotic fortune tellers have been deployed to various places in India, where those interested can plug in a pair of earphones and listen to pre-recorded bits of wisdom. They have the body of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and are painted in Iron Man’s colors. I wonder if they’re a hit?

As technology marches ever onward, robots have taken on more and more of life’s necessary jobs: heavy lifting, precise mechanical manipulations, and, of course, predicting the future.

Peppering the fairs and festivals of India, striking in their boldly colored if battered armor, are a fleet of robots that are part fortune cookie, part street-corner psychic. These bots wait in perpetual readiness to dispense their pre-programmed wisdom, and for only 5 rupees or so, the robot’s handler will allow you to plug a pair of headphones into its metallic underpants and listen as it tells your fortune.

The fortune-telling robots come in a range of shapes and sizes to best suit your fortune-telling needs (there is, in fact, a Flickr pool devoted to the various specimens). One of our favorite designs is the mod/retro combination of a smattering of LED lights and an analog clock, for those mortals bogged down in the worldly concerns of time (below).

The robots’ wisdom, apparently, comes on prerecorded tapes, audio fortune cookies that foresee the future in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Telgu. Not having heard the tapes ourselves—and not having any languages in common with the robots—we aren’t certain about the scope of these predictions. Do the robots whisper ticker symbols and stock market prices of the day after tomorrow? Do they speak of wars and famines, or the mundanities of day-to-day life? We wish we knew. Do you?

Groundhog Day Forecast From Famous Rodent

Punxsutawney Phil, the world-famous mascot of Groundhog Day, has made his official prediction. After emerging from his burrow in the time-honored tradition, Mr. Phil saw his own shadow, signifying that New York has six more weeks of winter.

However—not so fast Punxsutawney—a challenger has appeared!

Charles G. Hogg, “Staten Island Chuck” to his fans, has cast a counter-prediction. Is a rumble inevitable?

Did the groundhog see his shadow? It depends on who you ask.

Since the month of January was one of the warmest in Syracuse’s history this year, many Central New Yorkers expected Groundhog’s Day 2012 would bring news of an early spring.

As fate would have it, the world’s most famous weather forecaster, Punxsutawney Phil, emerged from his hole at Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania and declared that he did see his shadow this February 2nd. Since Phil saw his shadow, we’re supposedly expecting six more weeks of winter.

But Charles G. Hogg, the furry prognosticator at Staten Island Zoo better known as Staten Island Chuck, disagreed with the star of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand at a ceremony Thursday morning where Staten Island Chuck did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring. The New York groundhog indicated that milder weather is likely to be with us until March 20, the calendar start of spring.

Bloomberg survived this year’s event unscathed. In 2009, Chuck took a nibble out of the mayor’s hand, forcing Bloomberg to wash a finger and put on a bandage.

According to CBS, Chuck has accurately predicted the forecast 80 percent of the time since the 1980s (though he hasn’t been around as long as Phil’s 125 years).

Another rodent that disagreed with Phil’s extended winter is Georgia’s most famous groundhog, General Beauregard Lee. He did not see his shadow at Gwinnett County’s Yellow River Game Ranch, indicating that Atlanta and the surrounding area would see an early spring.

Ohio’s Buckeye Chuck also failed to see a shadow – it seems Punxsutawney Phil may be the only groundhog who’s predicting six more weeks of winter.

If you ask Bill Murray, of course, he’d probably quote a more negative forecast after reliving Groundhog’s Day over and over again in the Harold Ramis movie of the same name. “I’ll give you a winter prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life,” his hilariously tortured character Phil Conners said.

The Wisdom of Carlos Castaneda

Cliches are cliches because they continue to be true — and in every dark cloud there truly is a silver lining. To find the silver, or the blessing in your challenges, shift your perspective. Old Carlos was a Peruvian-born American author, an icon of the hippie generation. Carlos thought we should shift our thinking to meet challenges with pleasure and joy, even if they try to knock us on our derrieres. For example, my friend’s home went into foreclosure last year. Having struggled with a heavy mortgage for several years, her husband’s health deteriorated and then she lost her job. First reactions? Fear. Panic.

She soon found anxiety didn’t help, so she set it aside to focus on one piece of her puzzle at a time. Long story shortened, she and her spouse purchased a distressed property, used their small resources and huge energies to rehab the house, and are about to move into a comfortable, pretty home with no mortgage.

We can all conjure up feelings of terror, anxiety and defeat when life seems to slap us upside the head. It’s a natural reaction; you knock a knee with a mallet and the knee wants to jerk. Understanding the Peaks and Valleys of Female Desire

Men and women experience desire differently. Both genders can lose sexual desire over time, but it seems that women can often fall off the deep end of desire later in life. What’s to blame—nutrition? Lackluster male lovers? Or something else?

New research is demonstrating what many people already knew from experience: Women lose interest in sex over time, while men don’t.

The finding has the potential to help couples, the researchers said. Knowing that many women’s sexual desire diminishes over the course of a relationship could encourage both partners to be more realistic about their sex lives, and could help them weather the changes in desire as they occur.

Sex researchers Sarah Murray and Robin Milhausen, both of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, asked 170 undergraduate women and men who had been in heterosexual relationships for anywhere from one month to nine years to report on their levels of relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction and sexual desire. Desire was scored using an established model called the Female Sexual Function Index, which ranges from 1.2 to 6.0.

The participants reported being generally satisfied with their relationships and sex lives, but women reported lower levels of desire depending on the length of their relationship. “Specifically, for each additional month women in this study were in a relationship with their partner, their sexual desire decreased by 0.02 on the Female Sexual Function Index,” the authors wrote online Jan. 23 in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy.

In fact, relationship duration was a better predictor of sexual desire in women than both relationship and sexual satisfaction. While the 0.02 decrease in female desire was small, it contrasts with male desire, which held steady over time, the researchers said.

People who are primed to think about how madly in love they are with a partner put down other appealing members of their own sex, and are even more aggressive toward them, compared with people who are instead encouraged to ponder sex with a significant other, according to new research presented here last week at the annual meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

“Love, arguably the most positive of all human emotions, also comes with a dark side,” study researcher Jon Maner, a psychologist at Florida State University, told reporters at the meeting.

Rating others

In a trio of studies involving 130 people in long-term relationships, Maner and his colleagues found that to protect their own commitment to their partner, people would lash out at potential threats. In the first study, researchers asked students at Florida State University in long-term relationships to write about either a time when they felt intense love for their partner or a time when they felt intense sexual desire for the person — both positive relationship-related experiences. Next, the students looked at pictures of either an attractive or an unattractive man or woman, followed by a picture of a Chinese character. They were then asked to rate the appeal of the character; since the Chinese character is neutral, this question was meant to gauge the participants’ leftover feelings about the real target of the study — the pictures of the men and women.

The students also filled out questionnaires about their basic levels of jealousy, answering questions such as, “How likely are you to surprise-visit your partner to see who is with him/her?”

The results showed that jealous sorts and more laid-back types rated the characters as about equally attractive when they’d thought of intense sexual desire for their partner. But when they thought about intense love for their partner, the jealous sorts suddenly became very negative about other attractive people, rating them much less appealing.

Handle Negative Emotions Constructively

Nowadays, we’re not supposed to be angry. It isn’t good to be angry, because we are civilized people, who should be able to deal with our emotions in a constructive, non-threatening and non-confrontational manner. Of course, this results in a whole bunch of passive aggressive BS, backstabbing, talking behind another’s back and, of course, pent up rage, which then unfolds in people “losing it.”

I find nothing wrong with confronting people; quite on the contrary. I am absolutely sick to death of toxic nicety, sugarcoating, beating around the bush and pretentious cowards who run their mouth behind another’s back while never once confronting anyone. And this brings me to the fact that there are plenty of things I am angry about.

I’m not going into a long tirade now about all the things that really piss me off. But herd behavior is definitely my number one pet peeve; closely followed by the self-serving, whining, woe-is-me, never holding themselves accountable for anything downers, who simply don’t contribute a whole lot to anyone or anything. And of course, last, but not least, we have the self-entitled jerks, who really do believe that the world and everyone else owes them, because they had it hard in their life, had it really good in their life or some idiot parent taught them so. Nothing fuels my fire more than lame excuses for lame behavior and complete lack of integrity.

See, the thing is that we think so much in absolutes. Either we constantly confront, or we don’t confront at all. Either we run our mouths all the time, or never, and when we do, we can count on some Muppet who is going to tell you how negative you are. I, however, find a huge difference in being negative, down and angry all the time, and being angry about things sometimes. There is no such thing as always being happy and mellow, unless you are the Dalai Lama, which I am, unfortunately, not.

These days I sometimes wish people would get more angry and actually do something about it. And no, I do not mean blowing someone/something up, starting a war or getting into fistfights. No, we already have plenty of idiots who are doing that. I just sometimes wished people would grow some balls and start talking, debating or standing up for what they believe to be right in a constructive way. I wished people would stop arguing about who is right and learn to see another’s point of view. And of course, I wished people would be more interested in working on themselves and becoming a better person for the rest, before they start criticizing, attacking or undermining those who are different or make them feel threatened. Imagine what the world would be like if people would actually point the finger at themselves and chose to be the example for others, versus sitting on their butts and blaming everyone else. I can tell you that this world would be awesome.

Alas, complacency, blaming, deceitfulness and cowardice are so much easier to do then lifting a finger and doing something about it. And I think that is my greatest disappointment in human beings.

So how do I get over my anger and disappointment? I realize that there are things I have no control over and things I do have control over. And no matter how hard it is, I choose to take a long hard look at myself first, before I run my mouth about others. I do the work, even though I swim upstream a lot of the time, and I lead by example. I give to others as much as I can, I share and help wherever I can and realize that sometimes one small act of kindness can make a huge difference for another, and therefore inspire that person to do the same.

I’m no Dalai Lama and I am no Zen master. I get angry, disappointed, depressed and annoyed like everyone else. I just won’t let the negative emotions be my number one mode. And when it gets too bad, I let it out by writing, working out or talking to someone I can trust. After all, the worst thing we can do is to bottle things up and to dwell in anger, blame and regret.

The One Thing Every Man Needs to Hear

There is one thing I think every man would benefit from: I’m talking about opening their eyes and ears to their relationships. Most men are familiar with the phrase “It’s like talking to a brick wall,” because we’ve heard it a time or two.

There are numerous studies that describe men and women as complete opposites. Men supposedly have an inability to read emotions, because we’re taught at a young age to resist our brain from empathizing with feelings. We’d rather stop the process at its physical state of arousal, which is why when a woman is describing her bad day to us, we prefer to try to do something about it, rather than just listen and understand.

Then there are the studies that have concluded that men have an overabundance of “old brain,” which is basically an excuse for why we mostly just grunt and scratch ourselves a lot. Our brains have not evolved beyond the stages of basic communication; so full sentences are not always an option.

I’m from the school of thought that believes that men aren’t all that far away from women emotionally. There are studies that suggest men are actually slightly more in touch with their emotions at birth, but through social interactions learn to stifle this. I think a big part of these differences has a lot to do with motivation. The motivation to hear, the motivation to understand, and the motivation to empathize and change our actions in order to make our partner’s life easier.

First of all, anything is possible. Is it likely that he will stop drinking? No, not so much.

People don’t stop an addiction because of someone else; at least not usually. Also, it is never a good idea to enter into any relationship in hopes that the other is going to change. This will only result in disappointment and resentment. If you want a relationship with this man, you do need to consider if you can stay with him the way he is right now!

Alcoholics won’t stop drinking because they met the “right” person. This is due to the fact that their addiction has nothing to do with anyone else. No one made him start drinking, and no one will make him stop drinking either.

The part where an alcoholic seeks help, if he does seek help, is a personal point they will have to reach on their own. Is Love Ever Free?

One would love to think that in the realm of unconditional love there are indeed no conditions. Fat chance of that happening! The old saying “If you love someone and you let them go, and they come back, they’re yours” comes to my mind as I think about all the conditions we put on our loved ones in order to maintain a “happy” unconditional relationship.

Stipulations, clauses and requirements… if these things don’t exist in a relationship, then how do you keep it together?

As much as I like the idea of loving someone and being loved without condition, it leaves so much room for the relationship to fail. We enter into a marriage for many reasons—health benefits, having children, buying a home, etc. Without these conditions, you can still love the person, yet without the benefits of a legal contract it can create holes in the relationship that could cause the relationship to fall apart.

I do so many readings where the couples have been together for many years, and they’re not happy, because their conditions aren’t being met. So on to my next question: “What does unconditional” mean? Here are a few words that reflect this energy: absolute, unrestricted and unreserved.

I like the absolute part, and to be loved absolutely is a good thing… then I think of what unrestricted and unreserved mean without boundaries or limits, and I wonder, is that possible? Are expectations the same as having conditions in a relationship? Massive Solar Flares Headed Our Way

It’s often been observed that solar flares presage disruption not only of communications technology, but also of social structures. The Denver Post reports:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The sun is bombarding Earth with radiation from the biggest solar storm in more than six years with more to come from the fast-moving eruption.

The solar flare occurred at about 11 p.m. EST Sunday and will hit Earth with three different effects at three different times. The biggest issue is radiation, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado.

The radiation is mostly a concern for satellite disruptions and astronauts in space. It can cause communication problems for polar-traveling airplanes, said space weather center physicist Doug Biesecker.

Radiation from Sunday’s flare arrived at Earth an hour later and will likely continue through Wednesday. Levels are considered strong but other storms have been more severe. There are two higher levels of radiation on NOAA’s storm scale — severe and extreme — Biesecker said. Still, this storm is the strongest for radiation since May 2005.

Love With Healthy Boundaries

The key to finding meaning in the situation that broke your heart is to believe that there is a good reason, but that reason probably won’t be clear to you until some time has passed. After you can get some emotional distance, you will be able to see the purpose for what happened.

In her book, Everything Happens for a Reason, author Mira Kirshenbaum explains that “the reason something happened to you was to make something better in your future.” Keeping this point in mind when your heart is broken will give you strength.

Watch Your Language!

I hear it around me, I see it in my clients and, on occasion, in myself! It is the need to speak out and validate growing older and sharing the experience with others… sharing the limitations that seem to grow year by year. However as a behaviorist, I can tell you, that does not only accept that limitation… it is encouraging it to get worse!

The mind accepts the spoken word without much of a screening process, and it accepts thought as truth when we make statements like “I feel so old” or “My body aches every morning.” The brain takes these as “orders” from you!

So the most crucial step in this is to be ever vigilant about WHAT you say and think about yourself, and be very careful with what you program into your own behavior!

Here are the tools I teach to help with this:

1. Write a list of “negative thoughts and beliefs” you have about yourself. Now think of a counterweight to each of those and write the opposite — for instance, “I feel old” would have a positive counter of “I am learning to tune in to my youthful inner self.”

Think of the “negatives” as old tapes playing over and over, you can change those tapes, by stopping yourself the very second you realize you are doing it, and “pushing” the new positive though into your mind… it gets easier and easier as you do it and “re-record” over those old statements. You will notice that your brain responds and slowly you will “feel” more youthful and alive… try this for thirty days if you don’t believe me… its magic!

2. Talk to your body! Your body has cellular memory. Each ache, each pain has a type of “consciousness” that WILL respond to you. I have chronic pain issues, I talk to my body part and say, “I know you’re trying to let me know there’s something wrong. I do know, and am taking action (exercise, heat pads, medications) to help this, please turn down the volume on the pain signal you are sending to our brain.” It works.

3. Getting older can mean getting wiser, especially about ourselves, so identify things that you could be doing to bring more joy into your world. Figure out what stands between you and doing those things and make a “to do” list to take care of each thing, and a realistic time frame to have them done by.

4. Now set down these plans to a calendar, and make a weekly check in time. Take that day as a day to journal; your successes and the challenges of the past week. Note the upcoming plans that could be challenges in the next week and come up with possible solutions. These tools can produce miraculous changes and happiness!

I am in a relationship with a man for seven years. I enjoy him as a person, and he is a wonderful man. But I seem to have a hesitation towards marrying him, and I seem to find myself distracted by other men who I end up finding are not as supportive and easy to communicate with as my current boyfriend. He keeps waiting for me and putting up with more crap that I think anyone should handle. I just wish I could move in one direction. Either commit or move on. Do I have an issue with relationships or is this not the right one for me?

Dear Mary,

There are many wonderful qualities about your boyfriend, and he would be a safe choice for marriage. That seems to be a big part of your internal struggle—you really don’t want to marry for safety. You want excitement. You want a bit of “bad boy” in a good man. You want someone who will challenge you as a person, and your current boyfriend really doesn’t. To be bluntly honest, you don’t have the depth of respect for him as a person that you require of yourself for a husband or life-mate. Unless you choose to create a different outcome, I really don’t see you marrying this man.

No one is completely free of issues when it comes to relationships, but your struggles can’t be passed off as blanket “commitment phobia,” either. You do eventually want to commit, but you hugely fear surrendering your freedom and committing to the wrong person. It may help you to talk with a counselor or therapist, so that you can more deeply understand your own emotional responses when it comes to relationships. A few sessions are also highly likely to help you to more clearly see and understand that your boyfriend really isn’t the guy you can see yourself with. He is your safety net. Sometimes, he’s your balancing point. But if you’re going to be truly honest with yourself, you’ll never give him the title of being your equal. And, therein lies the true problem, which is compounded by the fact that he genuinely is a nice guy. Maybe, a little too nice…

Finding true love and creating a lasting relationship doesn’t come easily to everyone on the planet. While you have a workable relationship with your boyfriend, neither he nor the relationship is something you truly want in a “forever” sense. You’ve known that for a long time, you just don’t necessarily want to deal with it, because it brings to light that your finding “the one” is going to more of a challenge than many others experience.
